Dating back to the middle of the 17th century when Pureora was named by a Tohunga to mean "ritual of wellness", the Pureora Marae is located in a site thought to be the centre of the Southern Hemisphere.
Called Miringa te Kakara, it's a place of pilgrimage, built in the same triangular patterns and forms used in the building of the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. While many of the buildings are run-down or long gone, visitors to this spot believe the atmosphere remains. Revered by Maori around the country, it's renowned as a special place.
